Gayathri Vaidyanathan is based in Washington, DC, and covers the oil and gas industry for EnergyWire (www.eenews.net/ew).

She has reported on hydropower development in Asia, traveling through Thailand, Cambodia and Laos for the project. She has reported in East Africa about efforts to stave off a disease afflicting the world’s wheat supply. And she has tried to track wild chimpanzees through Liberian rainforests.

Gayathri was awarded the 2011 International Development Research Center fellowship. Her work has appeared in Nature, Greenwire, The Wall Street Journal, WNYC Radio News, and other publications.

She was raised in India, the U.A.E. and Canada. She has a M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from McMaster University in Canada. There, she was awarded a national grant to do research, and has one academic publication that identifies 4 potential drugs that target a tiny protein that is relevant during heart failure.
